On Sunday 9th July the Anglo Chilean Society held its annual summer ‘Asado’. The event was kindly hosted by our secretary Claudio Duran and his wife Claire at their wonderful home in rolling countryside on the edge of St Albans. The setting was perfect with the sun shinning and fantastic facilities including a heated swimming pool, games for children and lots of space to run, rest and have fun.
This year we had the privilege of having a Chilean chef, Matias Arteaga who prepared a wonderful bbq of pork loin in merquen and chicken accompanied by a wonderful selection of salads . Chris hopewell did a great job running the bar in his 40th year as a member!
More than 100 people joined us, including the Ambassador Rolando Drago and his family, Mathias Franke, Counsellor, Chargé D’Affaires a.i., the Chilean Consul, lots of children of all ages and members and friends of the Society.
The society was very grateful to all those who donated prizes for the raffle which included a monkey puzzle sappling.
Finally, we had a great news. Robert Hart, our treasurer will be decorated with the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins, the highest civilian honour awarded to non-Chilean citizens.
The chairman, Alasdair Grant thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the event such a success. He also thanked all those who had donated to the forest fire appeal and announced that £10000 had been raised and that £5000 had already been donated to fit out a community centre in Santa Olga which had been rebuilt since the fire.
