This year is the bicentenary commemoration of General José de San Martín's visit to James Duff, 4th Earl of Fife, in Banff, Scotland.
In the summer of 1824, General José de San Martín, the Liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, visited his friend James Duff, 4th Earl Fife, at Duff House in Banff, Aberdeenshire. On August 19, Banff authorities awarded San Martín the Freedom of the Royal Burgh of Banff, his only public recognition in the UK. San Martín and Duff's friendship, based on shared interests in politics, warfare, diplomacy, arts, and sciences, began during the Peninsular War against Napoleon. Duff supported San Martín's independence efforts for Spanish colonies, helping him travel to Buenos Aires in 1812, where his South American journey started. Their lifelong friendship lasted the rest of their lives.
